Under the current paradigm, most government officials are overwhelmed with too much information to process. Many elected officials, especially at a local level, are serving on an unpaid volunteer basis. Often the duties of their office have to be juggled with holding down a job, managing a business or raising a family.

 Meanwhile, they are obligated to read through reams of staff reports and attend city events, regional boards and various other committees. The net impact of all this is elected officials often have little time to spare for citizen concerns. It becomes an afterthought.
At the same time, officials typically hear only from a handful of residents who are politically engaged enough to come to meetings to speak up. By making it easier for residents and citizens to engage, Hiago will dramatically expand the number of voices that get heard.
We believe that both the democratically elected officials have a self-interest in acting on the priorities of the citizens whom they represent, and that they could benefit from a better system that provides accurate and ongoing information.
Hiago will allow member cities to rapidly view data on specific city issues or neighborhoods to learn what resonates most for their constituents. City officials will have the tools to directly engage their public for input on hot-button topics; meanwhile community members will have a convenient avenue to voice their opinions. 
Conversely, Hiago will provide constituents with information on what their government is doing and has done for them, providing a feedback loop that provides officials with their constituents’ reactions to their work, and making for a more informed citizenship.
